About The Teacher
My earliest memories include making music in the evening as
a family, listening to my parents singing duets for church, and falling asleep at nap time to the sweet sounds of my mother's
voice accompanied by the piano. I began picking out melodies on the piano at the age of four, and by age six my curiosity
had led me to teach myself note-reading. Thus began my musical journey.
By the time I was nine, I was already teaching
myself all the music I could find in our home. If I couldn't find written music for a song I wanted to play, I would create
my own arrangement using techniques I would hear on the radio or recordings in our home. My stay-at-home mother, recognizing
my musical gifts, took on a part-time job to finance lessons for my sister & myself. From that point on I took traditional
lessons off and on, as location and finances allowed, until graduating from college.
My bachelor's degree was in Music
Education and Performance, and I went on to receive a Master's in Voice Performance from the University of Iowa. I taught
grades 1-12 music for 10 years before teaching Kindermusik 16 years. I
also taught Voice and Traditional Piano for 12 years before discovering Simply Music.
Because the program sounded too good to be true, I checked it out thoroughly
for about a year after becoming licensed before offering it to my Kindermusik families in the fall of 2005. I've never had such rewarding experiences teaching piano to children. The students
bounce into my studio, eager to begin playing, and are already beginning to discover the satisfaction of composing their own
music.
